The Church Mount Tabor Baptist Church was founded in 1869 in the rural community of Keeling, VA. Keeling is located on the eastern side of Pittsylvania County, the largest county in Virginia. The area has a strong agricultural heritage. The county borders North Carolina and is adjacent to the City of Danville. Chatham, the county seat, is 140 miles from Richmond, 68 miles from Roanoke, 50 miles from Lynchburg, and 96 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. There are many churches in and around the Danville area and several churches that have very large congregations, pulling members from across the county. The mission of MTBC is to introduce Jesus Christ to those who do not know Him; to deepen the faith and commitment of those who already know Him through Bible study, worship, fellowship; and to demonstrate Christ’s love in service to others. MTBC has a weekly attendance of around 50. The largest demographic within the congregation is the 65 and up group. However, there are a few young families who attend. We are a part of the fellowship of churches through the Pittsylvania Baptist Association. We also have a relationship with the Virginia General Baptist Association. Position Description: General Description • The vision of MTBC is knowing Jesus and making him known. We are looking for a Pastor who will dedicate his life to pursuing our mission and vision as the leader of our congregation. • The primary areas of focus are teaching and preaching, pastoral care, and missional/community engagement. • Additional responsibilities may include strategic planning, leadership development, discipleship development. Qualifications • Ordained Baptist minister • Graduate theological degree from an accredited seminary or divinity school • Devout personal faith in Christ in the Baptist tradition • Pastor must become a member of MTBC and be tightly aligned with MTBC’s mission and vision Knowledge Skills Abilities & Character • Comprehensive knowledge of the Bible • Strong religious conviction • Ability to show impartiality • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing • Ability to show compassion and concern for the struggles and concerns of others • Ability to relate to various segments of the congregation • Ability to organize and lead mission/outreach projects and programs • Ability to teach • Ability to be a loving shepherd; humble, gentle, and patient • Ability to work together with church deacons and leadership • Belief that the Bible is the infallible Word of God • Approachable and genuinely connect with church members and the community Working Conditions • The position of pastor does require flexibility in hours available for work, including nights and weekend • The pastor may set office hours for greater accessibility to members of the congregation Responsibilities Overview • Oversee management of all areas of the congregation’s ministry • Provide spiritual, pastoral, outreach, administrative, and servant leadership to the congregation • Prepare weekly sermons that capture the essence of the biblical vision; preach and conduct worship services • Prepare and lead weekly Bible study activities • Interpret biblical scripture for the congregation • Provide care and counseling to the congregation (e.g. visit the sick, bereaved, prospects, etc) • Officiate special services (e.g., baptisms, weddings, funerals, infant dedications, etc) • Collaborate with church music leaders to integrate appropriate worship music into church services • Attend monthly deacon meetings and business meetings • Support, oversee, and evaluate church staff • Ensure church facilities are functioning • Represent the congregation in denominational or community organizations and activities to learn new ways the church can support and engage with the surrounding community Thank you for taking the time to review this opportunity to work with Mount Tabor Baptist Church as its pastor.
