REPORTS TO: Senior Pastor
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Traditional and Choral Music of Berea Baptist Church shall be a person of faith who has experienced a calling by God to minister to a congregation through music. The individual shall possess a level of spiritual maturity that would inform their leadership in all facets of the ministry. The person in this position shall have an awareness that the music of the church will have a great impact on the life of the church in worship, discipleship, devotion, mission, and service. The Director shall oversee, care for, and be the resource for all areas of music for the church. Additionally, the director shall oversee all other music related activities including, but not limited to, the Sanctuary Choir, children’s music and other ensembles as needed. The Director will also be responsible for maintaining all music equipment and supplies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work closely with the Senior Pastor to cultivate meaningful Christ-centered worship at the 11:00 am traditional service and that the music supports the church’s vision, mission, and preaching.
• Participate in worship planning meetings and contribute ideas for meaningful worship experiences.
• Select hymns, choral anthems, and service music that reflect biblical truth and align with the sermon theme and scripture.
• Prepare a worship order that fosters reverence, participation, and focus on God.
• Select appropriate choral pieces and lead weekly rehearsals to prepare for Sunday services and special events.
• Encourage spiritual growth and fellowship among choir members.
• Recruit, train, and encourage choir members and other volunteer musicians.
• Coordinate and schedule accompanists, soloists, and other musicians as needed.
• Arrange for solos, duets, instrumentalists, or ensembles to enhance worship when appropriate.
• Plan and direct seasonal programs (e.g., Christmas cantatas, Easter musicals) and other special services (e.g., revivals, homecomings).
• Maintain and organize the church’s music library, choir robes, and equipment.
• Ensure hymnals, sheet music, and rehearsal materials are provided and prepared.
• Lead the congregation in vibrant, participatory worship through traditional hymns and familiar songs; teach and introduce new hymns as appropriate, while preserving beloved traditions.
• Collaborate with children’s, youth, or senior adult ministries when choral or musical leadership is needed.
• Provide music for weddings, funerals, and other church-related events upon request.
• Pray for and with the choir and musicians.
• Model Christlike humility, servant leadership, and love for the Lord and the congregation.
• Provide music materials to choir members (sheet music, schedules, etc.) in a timely manner.
• Serve as a Berea Baptist Church staff member, demonstrating a commitment to God, the church, and its mission.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
• Possess a high level of artistry and proficiency in choral and instrumental directing, with knowledge of directing small choirs and ensembles.
• Be comfortable with a wide mix of musical styles including but not limited to traditional hymns, spirituals, gospel, classical church choir repertoire and contemporary music.

• Organizational skills to plan rehearsals, services, and maintain music resources.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills to recruit, encourage, and shepherd volunteers

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
• Strong experience collaborating with pastoral staff to plan music for a cohesive service, direct a church choir, lead worship, plan and lead music for worship services, including special seasonal programs
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Formal training in music and education in music ministry or church leadership (preferred)
WORK SCHEDULE & EXPECTATIONS
Approximately 25 hours/week (including preparation, programs, events, and meetings)
