Minister of Music Fort Hill United Methodist Church 106 Oakridge Boulevard, Lynchburg, Virginia 24502 (434) 847-1251 www.forthillumc.com Email: secretary@forthillumc.com Purpose: The part-time Minister of Music will give leadership for the overall music ministry of FHUMC as director of the church’s musical groups that provide music during worship services (Sanctuary Choir, handbell ensemble, brass ensemble, children/youth music). Essential Functions: • Serves as Pianist/Organist for 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning services, weddings, funerals, and other seasonal worship services (Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter and Christmas cantatas). • Plans for and leads weekly rehearsals for Sanctuary Choir, handbell ensemble, brass ensemble that participate in worship services as scheduled. Collaborates with Pastor and Worship Team regarding worship design and Scripture themes. • Schedules guest musicians to enhance worship services, especially during Christmas and Easter, working within the church’s approved budget. • Works with soloists and smaller ensembles to provide special musical offerings during worship. • Encourages the musical gifts of the congregation by offering a variety of musical opportunities in worship. • Collaborates with IT Director in sound setup for worship. • Works with the Children/Youth Ministry team in planning and organizing special music opportunities for young disciples (i.e. Summer Music Camp, music support for Vacation Bible School, music support for Wonderful Wednesdays); provides opportunities for young people to be involved musically in worship (children/youth choir, instrumentalists, etc.). • Provides music support for other church events as requested. • Responsible for purchase, organization and care of all music and choir supplies within the church’s approved budget. • Provides oversight of tuning church musical instruments; coordinates with Administrative Assistant to schedule tunings and regular maintenance. • Demonstrates knowledge of media communication, computer hardware and music software, as well as basic clerical and time management skills. • Supports the overall vision of the church, and initiates with the Church Council musical outreach opportunities that connect the church and community (i.e. periodic concerts/special musical events; taking our musical gifts out into the community). • Understands the Ministry of Music in the context of service to God in Christ as a means of bringing glory to God, especially through worship. Requirements • Educational requirements include either a degree in music or comparable experience as a church musician. • Demonstrates a living faith as a disciple of Jesus Christ and understands church music in the context of Christian ministry, as a service to God in Christ. • Reports to the church pastor and the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee as a staff member of Fort Hill. Time Expectation and Salary The time expectation for this position is 20 hours per week. Salary is negotiable, commensurate with skills, training and experience. Salary is paid once a month, on the last business day of the month.
