Supporting Pastors Through Continuing Education
BGAV Scholarships and Ministerial Education Funds offers new scholarship
“Leading a church, even under the best of circumstances, is inherently stressful. Pastoral burnout is real, and the well of inspiration can sometimes run dry,” said Jim Bunce, pastor of Marlow Heights Baptist Church in Front Royal, VA, who serves as chair of BGAV’s Scholarship Committee. That’s why opportunities for renewal—through conferences, workshops, and professional gatherings—are so vital. “Conferences and professional gatherings can renew and reinvigorate pastors, creating a tangible benefit for congregations.”
Recognizing that reality, BGAV is offering a new scholarship opportunity to help pastors continue growing in their calling: the Continuing Education Scholarship, designed to make ongoing learning more accessible for those already serving in Virginia Baptist churches.
“The primary motivation,” Bunce explained, “is to be good stewards of the monies we have available. Assisting those who are already serving in our local churches is a wise investment.” The scholarship helps pastors afford professional development experiences that strengthen their ministries—something many congregations value but can’t always fit into their annual budgets.
Across the country, many churches are navigating lower attendance and tighter finances, which often means fewer dollars for staff training and development. “Virginia Baptists deserve the best bang for their buck, especially when it comes to church leadership,” Bunce said. “Nationwide, church attendance is down, which typically indicates lower congregational income. Many Virginia Baptist churches struggle to meet budgets that can adequately cover staff salaries, building and property maintenance, missions, and education.”
The Continuing Education scholarships cover up to one third of the total cost of a conference including registration, travel, lodging, and meals, up to a maximum of $1,000. Individuals may receive one scholarship every three years. Ideally, the BGAV,
the church, and the pastor or staff minister each contribute one third of the total cost.
For pastors who pour so much of themselves into ministry, these scholarships offer a way to refill the well—to reconnect with peers, renew their energy, and return to their congregations refreshed and inspired.
